The Start of The War

Wireless Set
Many heard about the start of the war on the wireless.

Most children heard about the start of the war on the wireless from Neville Chamberlain. Most had been expecting war for the last 12 months and had gas masks and shelters ready. Parents were very anxious especially those who had taken part in WWI and knew the reality of war.

"It was announced that we were at war with Germany.
We hoped it wouldn't happen, but it did"

One lady remembers her neighbour, who was quite nervous anyway, coming into their house to listen to the radio. When war was announced she threw her pinny (apron) over her head in shock.

Many children expected something to happen straight away, but this was not the reality.

Building an Air Raid Shelter
Men were put to work to build enough shelters for everyone.
